Are Clear Aligners Just a Trend or Do They Really Help?

We all know clear aligners, work – We’ve all seen the results. But how do they straighten teeth precisely?

After all, clear aligners are vastly different from traditional braces, yet they can accomplish almost the same result.

Many think that aligners work just by snapping them onto your teeth, and your teeth would move magically, but that’s not the case.

How do clear aligners work?

Clear Aligners move your teeth by applying gentle pressure on your teeth, slowly and gradually shifting them into the desired position. Aligners are designed to make small movements, so switching from aligner to aligner tends to be more gentle and comfortable compared to your monthly braces visits. You might feel mild soreness during the first few days wearing each new set, however, that’s completely normal and even a good sign that your teeth are moving.

Aligners need to be worn at least 20 – 22 hours a day to be effective. Other than eating, brushing, and flossing, you are to wear them throughout the day.

How do clear aligners straighten teeth?

For particular cases, we recommend clients proceed with something called “attachments”. Think of them as handles for your aligners. Attachments are transparent bumps bonded to your teeth and are left there for the entirety of your treatment. The placement and shape of them will depend upon the movement required.

Attachments help apply pressure from the aligners onto your teeth and direct them into the proper position.

Things to remember with clear aligners

- Teeth only move when forces are applied consistently. As a result, you must be committed and disciplined in wearing your aligners 22 hours per day. Otherwise, the treatment may be extended, or you might end up with a compromised result

- Monitor the fit of your aligners and reach out to us if you have any concerns
- There are times when an additional set of aligners may be required to achieve better results due to different circumstances, for instance, you lose track of your aligners schedule
- With a severe cases, there may still be a chance you won't have to compromise your aest
hetics and get metal braces instead but that varies from case to case
